19 Aug How Can I Be Sure Lice Are Gone?
The stress of a head lice outbreak can feel overwhelming. You have to clean your home, make sure that lice don’t spread to you or the rest of your family or your child’s friends and keep your child home from school, which can be frustrating and embarrassing. Here are some lice need to knows so you can identify lice and ensure that you and your children are lice free.
Look for clusters of nits (lice eggs)
Head lice usually lay nits at the nape of the neck or behind the ears in clusters. They cluster close to the scalp which indicates that they are viable. They are usually at a distance of less than one centimeter from the scalp. If you begin to find that the nits are further away from the scalp, they may not be viable. Using a magnifying lens will make it easier to search for nits close to the scalp. You’ll want to make sure that there are no clusters of nits close to your child’s scalp for at least two weeks before you are in the clear.
Look for live lice (Nymphs and Adults)
Live bugs are on the move and may be difficult to see – they can be found on the scalp or hair. Use a magnifying lens or a fine tooth comb to identify lice. Adult lice are usually light brown in color and look like sesame seeds. A nymph is an immature louse that hatches from the nit, they are smaller than an adult louse and mature into adults about 9-12 days after hatching from the nit.
Check your surroundings
Lice can not only survive in your hair but on bedding, carpet, furniture, in your car and on hair brushes and accessories. Since lice can’t jump or fly, it’s unlikely that they will be present on items that your child hasn’t been in contact with. However, they can crawl, so you want to make sure that you clean your home extra carefully. If you’ve washed and dried on high heat all clothing, stuffed animals, pillows and pillowcases, vacuumed the carpet and furniture and cleaned the bathrooms your home and items should be lice free.
